Recommended Read: Extreme Ownership How Navy SEALS lead and Win
It is no accident that I am reading this book in this season of my life.
You may think why read a book about war? What does this have to do with Spirituality? It has everything to do with spirituality because The Bible says that we are at war
Ephesians 6:11-12
Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. 12 For we[a] are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
Don't Forget the Mission
The biggest takeaway for me from this book was that you must get clear on the mission and then do everything possible to accomplish that mission.
In order to accomplish the mission to get rid of the bad guys and make sure American and Iraqi soldiers went home to their families the SEALS had to
- Prepare
- Train
- Be Meticulous in all things
- Learn to work with others
- Develop Standard Operating Procedure
- Own EVERYTHING you do
- Careful even when making split second decisions.
- Only Tolerate the Highest Standards
In this day and age, most people are easily distracted and completely lose sight of the mission. There is no time for that in a war because you’ll end up dead and perhaps taking a whole lot of others with you in the process.
When Navy SEALS go into battle they are beyond prepared. They undergo other worldly training (You get a sneak peek into this into the book) and since anything can happen on the battlefield, they prepare for everything that can happen.
Just like the insurgents wanted to kill American and Iraqi soldiers to maintain a hold on their territory, the devil's mission is to kill, steal, and destroy to maintain a hold on our minds and our lives.
You gotta battle for it if you want it
"There are some prophetic words that you have to contend for" - Pastor Dawn HumphreyIt became clear to me while reading this book that I needed to step my game up majorly. Navy SEALS are legendary because their training process is so crazy. Most people don't make it past the tryouts because it is so hard.
You cannot be half hearted and be a Navy SEAL. You're either all in or you ain't gone make it.
Similarly I think that's how it has to be when you're contending for the promise God has given you. Other people will not get why you're putting yourself through the process but you know that the only way to victory is to be prepared and well trained.
I believe in this hour God will need some well trained folks and not those who are half hearted or unprepared.
At the end of every chapter there is a review of the principle and they also go through real world business applications. The business applications seamlessly translate to life application and yes to even spiritual principles.
